Play this word game with your child to improve her reading and spelling skills: Start with a simple three-letter word like “can.” Change one of the sounds within the word. For example, “can” becomes “cat.” Take turns changing one sound at a time. This activity helps your child focus on the individual sounds within words. Being able to hear individual sounds within words and manipulate them is a sign that your child has good phonemic awareness.
